  • I am looking for any information about my grandmother’s family. Her maiden name was Delia Melia. I know she had a brother named Michael who lived in Oughterad with one of his sisters. She came to the USA around 1910s or so. They did own a farm over there. Any info would be greatly appreciated. She married Parick Bohan from Moycullen.

  • Sean,

The Connacht Tribune has a number of articles which have the name Sean Sugrue who was active in Oughterard GAA during the three years in which he was stationed there. Tributes were paid by Pat Gibbons and Judge Burke in relation to his work in Oughterard. He was active as a GAA Referee.
    His transfer was to Sneem..
No photograph found in the Connacht Tribune.

  • Sean,
Report in Connacht Tribune dated December 22nd 1956:
    Transfer

No information on where Garda Sugrue went to!

Connacht Tribune dated December 10th 1960:

    New Garda
Guard James Sugrue a native of Cahirciveen has arrived from the Depot to Clifden. He is well known in GAA circles!

  • Sean,
If you have not already done so, you should write to the Editor, GSRMA House, 5, Harrington Street, Dublin 8, to be included in the Spring Issue (March) of SIOCHAIN – Retired Garda Magazine.

  • Sean,
Connacht Tribune dated June 10th 1961 has a report of a Junior Football Championship having been played in Oughterard on Sunday – Early June – between Naomh Feicin (Clifden) and Father Griffin’s.
Naomh Feicin were defending their Title and defeated Father Griffin’s by 5-8 to 2-4. Best in a balanced Naomh Feicin team were U. Joyce, T. Kelly, P. Donnellan, T. King, F. Dyer and J. Sugrue. Best For Father Griffin’s P. Ryan, Gilmore, Coyne and Heaslip.
Could “J. Sugrue” be whom you are seeking details of?

  • My uncle Sean Sugrue was stationed as a guard in Oughterard sometime between the ’50’s and early ’60’s. Wondering if anyone has photos or information of him.
    Thanks

  • Good Day. I have been researching the eviction in 1845 of Dan O’Hara and his family. I understand he was a tenant of Thomas Barnhall Martin and was evicted for ‘home’ improvement and not being able to pay his rent which was doubled. This seems incongrous when read in the light of the accounts of the Martin’s being very fair and kind hearted landlords. Any insights?. Thank you so much.
